Terri Marcus looks into the work described by the artist as lo-fi schmo-fi and attempts to answer the question, "What the fuck?"
Although seen as an artist who creates images that have a contemporary relevance, impact, style and affordability, and, are variously described as 'anti-intellectual', 'innovative and lifestyle friendly' Francis rarely discusses his work. Consistently and irritatingly quoted Warhol "Look at the surface of my painting and there I am" he avoids any attempt to describe or understand the content, simply "they exist". These works with their inspiration drawn from contemporary culture, pop art if you will, suggest another level of content.
"Call me Mr Reaper", smells like Grimm's come to call. After he was shot everybody thought Andy Warhol was dead, even he thought "I'm really dead. This is what its' like to be dead - you think you're alive but you're dead". So some of these pictures require an existential understanding, one comments on tabloid hysteria while others are merely symbolic of a corporate dead culture.
